foreign exchange student

Nana, a Japanese foreign exchange student, recently stayed with us for 12 days.  It was so much fun!  She didn't speak much English, but was very determined.  She would try several times to speak/understand and would use her translator or ask us to say it again a different way.  Ryan spoke Japanese to her a little, but we mostly stuck to English, because that was why she was here-  to learn English.  She was also very nice and polite.  But that is the Japanese way...

pizza picnic at Pine Lake

ordering pizza--I let her order anything she wanted.  She didn't know what pepperoni was and thought it was a type of tomato

breakfast foods--she didn't like them.  I tried to do something different every day, we had scrambled eggs, pancakes, oatmeal and cold cereal twice (because I got about 10 different kinds of cold cereal for her to try)  but on the 5th day, she said that breakfast was giving her a stomach ache and she wanted fruit for breakfast.  from then on she had a banana each morning.  In Japan, miso soup is the traditional breakfast.

rice--she missed it!  We had rice for dinner twice the first week,  Each night she writes in her English class journal about her day, new English words she learned etc.  and at the bottom of the page I write "host comments"  She will turn in this journal to her teacher at the end of her trip.  while writing host comments one night after we had rice for dinner, I noticed that the last sentence of her journal was "We had rice for dinner.  I felt so happy eating rice for dinner."  After that, I tried to have rice more often.  even if what we were having didn't really go with rice.  French dip sandwiches...with rice!

Alki beach

do you see Rainier in the background?  Trent was on an igloo campout on Mt. Rainier during our Seattle fun day.

burgers--After an exhausting Saturday in Seattle, where we crammed as much as we could into the day, Alki beach, Seattle Center, Space Needle, Pike's Place Market, I asked her what her favorite part of the day was and she said the hamburger for dinner!  We had taken her to XXX Rootbeer, a great local burger place, and she said it was the best hamburger she's ever had, much better than in Japan.

movies--When told she could pick any movie she wanted, she asked if we could watch High School Musical.  Emily was very happy.  Apparently, there is a few years delay and High School Musical is popular over there.  We also introduced her to Once Upon a Time and Say Yes to the Dress.

One night, Nana cooked us dinner.  it was so good!  Okonomiyaki

the High school had a Japanese Expo that was very cool.  the American kids taking Japanese had to prepare booths and posters etc.  Emily's booth was yakitori.  and then the Japanese kids performed a few songs and dances.  It was very cool.  there were 40 kids that came over from Japan, working with 2 local high schools.  20 kids at each high school.  during the day, they would have English class, sight see, practice for the expo, shadow students, and help out in the Japanese classroom.

Nana loves Oreos, and really enjoyed trying different kinds

Nana left this morning and it was very sad!  This was a great experience for all of us and we would definitely do it again!

Awesome post! Cool that Emily did Yakitori, it reminds me of the yakitori guy with his cart. Every time I see a post about the XXX rootbeer I get an urge to move to Seattle. Also good to see that Trent is sporting the Vote for Pedro shirt!
