Emily broke her arm last week (December 30th) in a snowmobiling accident. We were in Idaho, visiting my parents, who have snowmobiles. and Grandpa's rule is that you need to be 12 to drive alone. Emily, who just had her 12th birthday, was so excited to drive all by herself. This accident happened in the parking lot, within the first 30 seconds of driving. Clearly, she wasn't ready. Grandpa's new rule is now at least 14 years old to drive alone for both snowmobiles and jet skis. Trent was NOT happy about that. and as my dad says, "Grandpa is in the doghouse with Grandma for the next 20 years."
So..what happened? I was on a snowmobile right behind her and saw the entire thing. It was very scary as a mother to watch....she was supposed to be following my dad, and was about 10 feet to the left instead of right behind in his tracks. she went over a snowbank, tried to turn, while on the snowbank, started to loose her balance, the snowmobile started to tip over. Her hand was thrown into the throttle, giving it gas and the machine soared through the air, catching air, and eventually crashing into a large rock. She was thrown from the snowmobile, up in the air like a giant flip. and landed on the rock. luckily she was wearing a helmet and it wasn't worse.
we weren't sure it was broken...she had a bad sprain back in April and it seemed to be about the same pain wise experience. So Emily and I sat in the car while Ryan and Grandpa took the boys on a quick 5 minute ride down the road. (poor boys were looking forward to this all winter!) and then we loaded up the machines and took her into the ER. It was too swollen to cast, so we went back today, 6 days later for the cast. turns out there was a fractured forearm and possibly a second fracture in the wrist, but it was hard to tell. It's her right arm, and she's right handed, also.
the most important decision of the day...what color to choose??
she ended up going with purple and blue striped. and a full arm cast! afterwards, we went to Red Robin for lunch, a quick stop at Michaels next door for some new silver and black sharpies so everyone can sign the cast, and then it was back to school. She's got it all worked out. Black sharpie if you sign on the blue and silver sharpie if you sign on the purple. just in cast you wanted some options! The waitress at Red Robin gave her a free root beer float b/c of her broken arm! How nice.

Poor Emily! A very similar thing happened to Noelle and I the first time we drove snowmobiles by ourselves, though not within the first 30 seconds, and thankfully, neither of us broke anything! We were supposed to follow exactly in my uncle's tracks, and stay 10 feet behind the person in front of us...neither of us listened, and we both crashed into each other, in a snow bank...it took forever to dig the snowmobiles out!
Oh no!!! Poor Emily! I'm glad to hear she is "ok" - considering it sounded like a very scary accident!! Love her cast color choice! :)
We are so sorry to hear about the accident. We know too well how things go when snowmobiling with Uncle Monte. Hope Emily feels better and the boys get to ride again soon! (supervised of course). P.S. it was great to see your family at Alexa's wedding!
Great choice of cast color Emily! If you are right-handed, it must be a hindrance for everyday life. Luckily, you have several loving family members to assist you.

Wow, that's a scary accident. So, Emily gets to join the ranks of having had broken bone. Hopefully, no more...ever. :) I love the color choice, very stylish and retro.

I really shouldn't have laughed that hard as I read the story, but I just couldn't help think of all the stories you told of the times you broke your arm growing up. I am sure it was terrifying to watch, but what a fun story for her to tell, and what an awesome cast :).
