This past weekend I surprised Ryan for his birthday with a get away trip, just the two of us! We left the kids with a young, married couple in our ward. I gave them a flurry of notes about soccer, baseball, piano lessons etc. (we're BUSY people around here!) and we were off to Leavenworth. a darling little town 2 hours east of Seattle. A Bavarian village. in Washington. Advertised as "a world away on just a tank of gas." It was so fun! It was originally settled by Germans as a logging town, but then in the 1960's, when the logging industry slowed, they decided to switch to tourism to keep the town going. Everything is in German! We got a kick out of all the German-English mixtures. Das Copy Shoppe. Heidle Burgers, Das bike haus.

dinner at Visconti's--that would be cioppino for Ryan and the classic spaghetti and meatballs for me. :)
We biked about 10 miles!!! up icycle canyon and then a loop around Leavenworth. meandered through the shops, and took a drive up the canyon--saw some rock climbers and white water rafters.
miles of blossoming pear trees! It was a beautiful drive. We assumed they were apple trees, because, this is Washington after all, but later learned that apple trees have pink blossoms and usually grow in southern Washington. Pear have white blossoms and are more central Washington.
they were having a mud run that day, called the Bavarian Battle so we stopped by to take a look and get a glimpse of what Ryan and I will be doing next month. except we probably won't be in costumes...
But hands down, the best thing about this trip was our amazing B&B, called Run of the River. A friend had recommended it and wow!! it's a small, adult only, bed and breakfast that has won numerous awards for best B&B, most romantic B&B etc. We highly recommend them. click here for their website.
the dining room is all set up for the five course gourmet breakfast, which was SO good.
our view from our porch. the inn is backed up against a refuge so it's very peaceful and quiet. and we saw lots of wildlife.

each guest was given a bag of bird seed to put out in the feeders on your porch--we saw so many different and colorful birds!
It was the perfect get away. Happy Birthday Ryan!

Oh my goodness this is awesome!!!!!!!!! Jill I'm so glad you made time to do this with your sweet husband. What fun and romance. The B&B tops it though, good food, and a view can't think of anything better.
Guess what? My in laws and sister in law are taking my four oldest kids on a road trip in July through Oregon up to Washington! They are going to visit with you! It's a must. They are leaving July 20th, I will fill you in details through email, but just keep it in mind. Unfortunately, won't be there but it will be fun for the kids to see each other again, if we can make it happen. How far are you from Oregon? We'll talk...take care, miss you,
